Website design in Nottingham: what actually gets you found

A Nottinghamshire engineer on crawlable pages, one host, and a Google profile that matches the site — without fake logos or bought links.

Most pages targeting “website design Nottingham” are a brochure with a stock skyline and a contact form. This is not that. I build production sites for East Midlands businesses — the kind Google can crawl, a customer can use on a phone outside Broadmarsh, and you can change on a Tuesday without an account manager.

The local problem is not “make it look nicer”

If you already have a site, the usual failure is quieter than an ugly homepage. The page that should rank for your service + your town is a JavaScript overlay. The number on Google does not match the footer. Case studies live in a modal that never gets a URL. Canonical tags point at a host nobody uses. I have shipped all of those mistakes. I have also had to undo them.

Hashton Agency is a new studio in Nottinghamshire, run by me — Harry Ashton. I will not pretend we have a wall of East Midlands SME logos. What I do have is eleven-plus years of production engineering and live work you can open: EO Charging, Thrive Learning, and my own product, CodePrepped.

That honesty is the point. Local search punishes invented proof. A thin “we’re the best in NG1” paragraph with stock photos is easy to generate and easy to ignore. A site that loads, names the work, and matches the Google Business Profile is harder, and it is what actually gets enquiries.

What a Nottingham business actually needs from a website

  • One honest host. Pick www or the apex and make canonicals, sitemap, Open Graph, and schema agree. Mixed hosts waste crawl budget and confuse Maps. This site standardises on https://www.hashton.agency because that is where users already land.
  • Pages with addresses. Services, location, and proof need URLs a crawler can fetch without clicking a button. If it is not a link, it is not a page.
  • A location page that is not a keyword dump. Website design in Nottingham should say who you are, where you work, what you ship, and how to book — then prove it.
  • Speed on a mid-range Android. Your customer is not on office fibre. Core Web Vitals here are whether the site opens on the tram, not a Lighthouse screenshot in a pitch deck.
  • A Google Business Profile that matches the site. Same trading name, same website URL, same phone once you publish one. I will not invent a street or a number to win a pack.

National agencies vs someone who will pick up

Search “web design Nottingham” and you will see established firms with retainers, account managers, and a junior on the build. That model fits a 40-page brochure and a twelve-week timeline. It is a poor fit if you need a booking flow, a CMS that is not a plugin graveyard, or a founder who can read the analytics with you.

I ship as the engineer. No handoff. You get Next.js on Vercel with Postgres behind the content, because the pages and the articles should be records with slugs, not slides in a designer’s file. That is also why this blog is a table: drafts stay unpublished until they should be public, then they get a URL and a sitemap row.

What I will not do

I will not buy a bag of directory links. I will not stuff “best web designer Nottingham 2026” into a footer. I will not publish a fake phone number. If you need forty pages of stock testimonials, there are agencies in this city who will sell you that. If you need a site that can be found, booked, and maintained, that is the work.

Service area is Nottingham, Hucknall, Mansfield, Newark, Derby, Leicester, and the rest of the East Midlands — plus remote when the work is software, not a shopfront photoshoot. Start with the Nottingham page or book a call. Bring the current URL. I will tell you, in writing, what is actually broken.
